Q: What's the best way to bandage a leg on a horse?
A: There are different bandages for different situations. Get the advice of your veterinarian, especially if treating a wound. You may also refer to the USPC Guide to Bandaging your Horse, by Susan E. Harris, which has text and illustrations.
Q: What is TPR?
A: TPR is an abbreviation for Temperature, Pulse, Respiration - also known as vital signs. Normal rectal temperature for an adult horse is 99.5-101.5F or 37.5-38.6C. Normal Pulse for an adult horse at rest is about 32-36 beats per minute (you can listen to the heart beat with a stethoscope). Normal Respiration for an adult horse at rest ranges from 8 to 12 breaths per minute. Foals will often have a slightly higher temperature and faster pulse and respiration. Consult with your veterinarian if you have any questions about what is normal for your horse.
Q: What should I put on a wound?
A: First consult with your veterinarian, and then follow his or her recommendations. A new, fresh wound may be treated differently than an older wound. If sutures are required, it is better NOT to apply any salves or creams. Always try to keep the wound clean and as free from contamination as possible.
